What THC actually is

One molecule

THC is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. It is one of well over a hundred cannabinoids the cannabis plant produces, and it is the one responsible for the effect people mean when they say a drink is psychoactive. Almost nothing else in the plant does what it does.

It was isolated and its structure described in 1964 by Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni at the Weizmann Institute. That date is worth holding onto: the plant is ancient, but knowing precisely which molecule was doing the work is about sixty years old, and the receptor it acts on was not identified until the late 1980s.

A receptor system that was found by looking for it

The reason THC does anything is that humans have receptors shaped to bind it. Those receptors were discovered because researchers went looking for whatever THC was binding to, and the system they found was named endocannabinoid after the plant compound that led them there, rather than the other way round.

CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and central nervous system, and they are where the psychoactive effect happens. CB2 are found largely in immune tissue and the periphery. The body makes its own compounds that bind these receptors, notably anandamide and 2-AG, which is the part people find most surprising: the system is not a quirk of drug use, it is standing physiology involved in appetite, pain signalling, mood and memory.

Why a drink can be sold at all

Hemp-derived THC drinks exist because of a definition, not a pharmacological distinction. US federal law separates "hemp" from "marijuana" by a threshold of 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight, and hemp was removed from the Controlled Substances Act on that basis in the 2018 Farm Bill.

The consequence is not intuitive. A threshold expressed as a percentage of weight is easy to stay under in a liquid, because the liquid is mostly water and weighs a lot. A 12oz can is roughly 355 grams, so 0.3% of it is over a gram of THC, which is orders of magnitude more than any drink contains. This is why a 10mg can is comfortably compliant while 10mg of THC in a gummy is a much larger share of that product's weight.

So the dose in your can is not limited by the federal percentage in any meaningful way. It is limited by state law, by what the brand decided, and by nothing else. That is a large part of why the doses on the market vary as much as they do, and why this site is organised around the milligram figure rather than around any legal category.

There is no legality section on this site and that is deliberate. Hemp THC beverage law moves fast enough at state level that a static page would be wrong somewhere within months, and a confidently wrong legal claim is worse than no claim.

THC is not water soluble, which is the whole engineering problem

THC is a lipid. It does not dissolve in water, and a drink is mostly water. Every THC beverage on the market is therefore an emulsion: the THC is processed into droplets small enough to stay suspended rather than separate out and stick to the inside of the can.

This is the source of most of the category's marketing. "Nano-emulsified", "fast-acting", "hits in fifteen minutes" are all claims about droplet size and what it supposedly does to absorption. The manufacturing problem is real. The claim that it reliably produces a faster, more predictable onset for any given person is much thinner than the marketing suggests, and how it works goes through the independent evidence.

The four things worth actually remembering

  • The milligram is the spec. Strain names, terpene talk and "sativa" or "indica" framing on a beverage tell you far less about your evening than the number does. Reading the milligram covers the one place that number does lie to you.
  • Onset is slow and variable. Eaten or drunk, THC goes through the liver first, and the delay is long enough that people take a second dose before the first has arrived. That mistake is the single most common bad night in this category.
  • It is not interchangeable with alcohol by volume, dose or duration. See THC drinks against alcohol.
