THC drinks against alcohol

Almost every article on this subject is written by someone selling one of the two. So here is the comparison with the thumb off the scale, including the places where alcohol genuinely wins.

Calories, where the drinks win clearly

This one is not close, and it is the least interesting.

A 12oz THC seltzer is frequently 0 to 60 calories, and a meaningful number of them are zero-sugar sparkling water with an emulsion in it. A 12oz beer is typically around 150, a 5oz glass of wine around 120, and a cocktail with syrup in it can pass 250 comfortably.

The caveat is that the sweetened end of the THC category is not diet food either. The sodas and the iced teas in this database run to 60 to 90 calories with 15 to 22 grams of sugar, which is ordinary soft-drink territory. The per-product pages carry the figure where the brand publishes one, and say "not listed" where it does not, which is more often than you would expect.

Hangover, where the comparison is usually rigged

The claim is "no hangover". The fair version is "a different next day, and usually an easier one".

Alcohol hangover has well-described mechanisms: dehydration, acetaldehyde, disrupted sleep architecture, inflammation. THC does not produce that syndrome, and people who switch generally do report better mornings.

But "no hangover" is not "no aftereffect". Grogginess the following morning is commonly reported, particularly at higher doses and taken late. Both substances degrade sleep quality, and THC's effect on REM sleep is real. Feeling fine at 9am is not the same as having slept well.

The genuinely rigged part is the comparison dose. "One THC drink versus a night of drinking" is not a comparison, it is two different evenings.

Dependence and harm, where it is closer than either side admits

Alcohol is, by most population-level measures, among the most harmful recreational drugs, and it is the only one of the two with a withdrawal syndrome that can kill you. It causes organ damage over time, it is causally linked to several cancers, and its role in violence and injury has no equivalent here.

Cannabis use disorder, by contrast, affects a smaller fraction of users, and there is no realistic fatal overdose from THC. That is a real difference and it deserves saying.

Where the comparison gets rigged in the other direction is the phrase "non-addictive", which appears on a lot of marketing and is not true. Dependence is less common than with alcohol; it is not absent, and it rises with frequency and dose. And THC carries a risk alcohol does not: in people predisposed, a dose-related association with psychosis.

Impairment, where they are simply different

Both impair driving and both are worse together. But they impair differently: alcohol impairment is reasonably well characterised, roughly proportional to blood concentration, and enforceable with a number. THC is not. Blood levels track impairment poorly, tolerance moves the relationship enormously, and there is no equivalent of a 0.08 threshold that means the same thing for everyone.

Practically: you cannot "count drinks" your way to knowing you are fine, and a roadside test will not tell you what a breathalyser tells a drinker. There is also the drug testing problem, which is a separate and much longer window than people expect.

The three places the comparison is usually rigged

  1. Unequal doses. One 5mg seltzer against four beers is not a comparison.
  2. "Non-addictive" and "no hangover" stated flatly. Both are directional truths sold as absolutes.
  3. Borrowing alcohol's social script. A 10mg can looks like a beer, is priced like a beer, and comes in a four-pack like a beer, but it does not behave like one. It arrives late, it lasts longer, and a second one taken at beer pace is the most common mistake in the category.

The honest summary

If you are replacing alcohol with a THC drink, you are very likely taking on fewer calories, an easier morning, and a lower long-term organ-damage risk. You are also taking on a substance with a slower and less predictable onset, no reliable way to gauge your own impairment, and a real if smaller dependence risk of its own.

That is a defensible trade for a lot of people. It is just not the trade the marketing describes, which is usually that you get everything and give up nothing.
