The science

THC drinks and drug tests

This is the question people are most often too embarrassed to ask and most need a straight answer to. Here is the straight answer, drawn from a position statement of the American College of Medical Toxicology endorsed by four other clinical bodies.

The test cannot tell what you drank

A positive urine THC-metabolite test does not identify the route of exposure, the source, the timing, the dose, or whether the exposure was intentional.

So there is no such thing as testing positive "only from a seltzer". A hemp beverage and a joint produce the same metabolite, and nothing in the result distinguishes them. Any argument built on "it was only a legal drink" is an argument about the product, not about the test, and the test is what the employer reads.

The window is about the metabolite, not the effect

Federal HHS cutoff for a positive urine result is THC-COOH above 15 ng/mL.

THC-COOH is the inactive metabolite. It hangs around vastly longer than the effects do, because THC is lipophilic and accumulates in fat tissue with repeated use, then releases slowly. You can be entirely unimpaired, for weeks, and still test positive.

For chronic heavy users, THC-COOH "may be detectable for a month or longer" after last use.

Why nobody can give you a number

The toxicology statement is explicit that the timeframe "varies widely depending on cannabis use history and individual characteristics such as adiposity".

You will see "about three days after a single use" repeated everywhere. We could not confirm that figure in any clinical or toxicology source. It appears mostly on addiction-treatment marketing sites, and we are not going to hand you a number that might cost you a job.

The usable version: occasional use is days, frequent use is weeks to over a month, and the variance between two people is larger than most estimates admit.

The practical read

If you are tested, or could be tested without warning, the risk is not something a low dose manages away. A 2mg social tonic still produces the same metabolite as everything else. That is a decision to make with clear eyes rather than a problem to optimise.
