Delta-9 and delta-8

Almost every drink in the database is hemp-derived delta-9. Delta-8 shows up more in gummies and vapes than in beverages, but the distinction is worth understanding because the two are constantly discussed as if they were interchangeable, and chemically they nearly are.

They are the same molecule, bent differently

Delta-9-THC and delta-8-THC are positional isomers. Identical molecular formula, C21H30O2. The only difference is where one carbon-carbon double bond sits: at the ninth carbon in the ring for delta-9, the eighth for delta-8.

That sounds like nothing. It is enough to change the three-dimensional shape of the molecule, which changes how it fits the CB1 receptor, which changes what it does to you.

Delta-8 is weaker

Delta-8 is a weaker CB1 agonist. The peer-reviewed source we worked from gives two different figures in two different places, roughly two-thirds the oral potency of delta-9, and separately "about 75 percent". Both point the same direction, so the honest way to state it is a range of roughly 65 to 75 percent, not a single confident number.

The part that actually matters

Delta-8 occurs in cannabis only in trace amounts. There is not enough of it in the plant to extract commercially.

So nearly all commercial delta-8 is manufactured, by acid-catalysed chemical conversion of hemp-derived CBD. That process can introduce byproducts and impurities depending on how carefully it is controlled, and the quality of that control varies enormously across an industry with uneven testing.

Hemp-derived delta-9, by contrast, is the same molecule found in cannabis, and in a beverage it is typically isolated rather than chemically converted. That is a genuine chemical difference between the two supply chains, separate from any legal argument about either.

What that means at the shelf

If a drink does not say which cannabinoid it contains, that is worth noticing. If it says delta-8, the question worth asking is who tested it and whether you can see the certificate.
