Your first THC drink

There is really only one way this goes wrong, and it is always the same way: you have one, you feel nothing, you decide it did not work, you have another, and then both of them arrive at once.

Everything below exists to stop that.

Start under 5mg

The Minnesota Department of Health, which regulates one of the more mature markets in the country, tells adults to start with less than 5mg and to let it take effect before taking more.

Hold that next to how these products are actually packaged. The standard edible serving that most regulation is written around is 10mg. So a first-timer who opens one normal-looking can and drinks it has already taken roughly double what a state health department suggests as a starting point.

That gap is not a conspiracy, it is just a mismatch between what the industry standardised on and what public health recommends. But it means you cannot use "one container" as your unit. Use the milligram.

On this site that means the Microdose and Social tiers, which is to say everything at 5mg and under.

Wait two hours, not twenty minutes

The CDC puts the onset of edible cannabis products, beverages included, at 30 minutes to two hours.

You will read a lot of claims that drinks are much faster than that. Those claims come almost entirely from the companies selling the drinks, and the independent evidence is thin. We went through it in detail in Do drinks really hit faster?. The short version: maybe, somewhat, under some conditions, and not reliably enough to bet an evening on.

So take the slow number. Set an actual timer for two hours. Not a vague sense of "a while", because a vague sense of a while is about eleven minutes when you are waiting to feel something.

Eat first

This is the least scientific advice here and the most consistently useful. Food in your stomach slows everything down and takes the edge off the arrival. An empty stomach makes the whole curve sharper, which is the opposite of what you want the first time.

Plan for the evening to be over

Do not schedule anything after. Not a drive, obviously, and not a call you care about either. THC effects can persist for many hours regardless of how you took them, and the tail end is longer than the interesting part.

Being somewhere you are happy to stay is most of what makes a first experience good instead of anxious.

Do not add alcohol

Not a smaller amount of alcohol. None. This is the one rule on this site that does not bend, and the reasoning is in THC and alcohol.

If it goes too far

It is uncomfortable, it is frightening if you are not expecting it, and it ends. Sit down somewhere familiar, get water, and let it pass. Being cold, or getting some air, helps more than you would think.

If someone is vomiting repeatedly, cannot be roused, or has chest pain, that is a call to emergency services, not something to wait out.

A good first drink

Something small, something you would drink anyway, and something with the number printed on it. A 2mg can over ice with fresh citrus is a genuinely nice drink that happens to be about as gentle an introduction as this category offers.
