Steps
- Pack the mug with crushed ice.
- Add the lime, then the ginger beer, then the can.
- Do not stir. Let it layer and let the first sip be the ginger.
Why it works
The can is a ginger and key lime seltzer, which is a mule in outline but not in intensity. Two ounces of a properly hot ginger beer supplies the heat the format is built around. Crushed ice matters more here than usual: the extra surface area chills it hard and fast, and cold is what makes ginger heat read as sharp rather than harsh.
